Turn Your Ubuntu Intrepid Into Mac OSX Leopard

This is an updated version of my previous post Turn Ubuntu Hardy into Mac OSX.

That post was written six months ago and many things have changed during this period of time: release of Ubuntu Intrepid, newer Mac4Lin theme, better globalmenu applet etc. As such, I have decided to rewrite this tutorial for the Intrepid platform.

Disclaimer: This tutorial was based on Ubuntu Intrepid and
Mac4Lin RC1 themes. I don’t guarantee that it will work on other distro
or other version of Ubuntu.

Download the Mac4Lin themes and extract it to your Home folder. You should see a Mac4Lin_v1.0_RC1 folder that contains all the configuration files in your Home directory.

Preparing the installation path

Next, in your Home directory, press Ctrl + H to reveal all the hidden files. Check if any of the three folders .themes, .fonts, .emerald exist. If not, create three folders and name them .themes, .fonts, .emerald. Create another folder within .emerald folder and name it themes.

Installing the Mac4Lin themes

Open a terminal, type in:

cd Mac4Lin_v1.0_RC1

sh Mac4Lin_Install_v1.0_RC.sh

This will install the Gnome themes (window border and icons), change the wallpaper and the panel background.

During the installation process, the installer will ask you for root
access in order to install certain components (refer to the image
below). Type y to continue.

After the installation, your desktop should look something like this:

Installing the AWN dock

(The AWN dock may/may not work in all machine. If you find that it
does not work after following the instructions below, you may want to
try out Cairo dock that is less demanding on the machine.)

The AWN dock requires a compositing manager to work. If your system
supports Compiz, it will be able to run AWN as well. if not, we have to
install the X compositing manager.

Go to System -> Preferences -> Appearance, click on the Visual Effects tab.  Click on the Extra
radio button. If you see the following image, then your computer does
not support Compiz. (If you don’t see the image below, proceed directly
to install AWN.)

You have to install the alternative X composition manager

sudo apt-get install xcompmgr

Add it to your auto-start list. Go to System -> Preferences -> Session. Add the following:

Install AWN

The AWN dock is already included in the Intrepid repository, so you can easily install it by clicking this link. Alternatively, you can also type the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install avant-window-navigator

Once the installation is done, go to Preferences -> AWN Manager. On the left pane, click on the Themes. On the right, click Add. Navigate to the Mac4Lin_v1.0_RC1 folder. Open up the AWN folder and select Mac4Lin_AWN_v1.0_RC.tar.gz. Click Open. The AWN theme should be installed now. Check the radio button beside the theme and click Apply. Click Close.

Before we launch the AWN, we need to remove the bottom panel so that
there won’t be an overlap. At the bottom panel, right-click the mouse
and select Delete This Panel. Activate AWN by going to Applications -> Accessories -> Avant Window Navigator. You should see the AWN loading up in the bottom of the screen. To add applications to the dock, click on the Applications
at the top panel and navigate to the particular application you want to
add. Drag the application icon to the dock. That’s it. You should see
something like the image below:

To start AWN everytime you log in, go to System -> Preferences -> Sessions. Click Add. Fill up the following:

Click Add, follow by Close. AWN will now automatically load when you login to your computer.

Installing OSX font

Go to System -> Preferences -> Appearance. Click on the Fonts tab Change the following field to the same as the image below:

Make sure the Subpixel smoothing (LCDs) button is checked. Click Close.

Installing Global menu

There is a repository for Ubuntu Intrepid that you can add to the sources.list,
but it is not the updated version (0.6) and it is buggy. Instead, we
will download the latest version (0.7.1) from the code homepage. In the
future when the repository is updated to the newer and more stable
version, I will update this post again.

For 32-bit machine

Download gnome-globalmenu-0.7.1-1.fc10.i386.rpm to your Home folder from the Globalmenu Google code site.

Note that the file is of rpm format. We need to use alien to convert it to deb format.

In the terminal, type:

sudo apt-get install alien

sudo alien --scripts gnome-globalmenu-0.7.1-1.fc10.i386.rpm

This will create a gnome-globalmenu-0.7.1-1.fc10.i386.deb file in your Home folder. Double-click on the deb file to activate the installer. Click Install Package to install Globalmenu.

For 64-bit machine

Open your text-editor (Applications -> Accessories -> Text Editor).

Copy and paste the following:

# export GTK_MENUBAR_NO_MAC="fast-user-switch-applet"

Save the file as .gnomerc in the Home folder.

In your terminal,

gksu gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add the following line to the end of the file. Save and close.

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/globalmenu-team/ubuntu intrepid main

Back in your terminal,

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install gnome2-globalmenu

Now, on the top panel, remove all the icons and menu from the left side of the panel. Right-click on the icon and select “Remove from panel”.

On the right of the top panel, remove the logout icon. Still on the right hand side of the top panel, right click and select ‘Add to panel‘. Scroll down the list and add ‘Search for files‘. This will add the spotlight icon to the panel.

On the left of the top panel, right click and select ‘Add to panel‘. Scroll down the list and add Main Menu and Global Menu Panel Applet.

The Globalmenu might not appear or work well after you have added
it. Logout and login again and you should see the globalmenu working
perfectly on the top panel.

Right click on the globalmenu and select Preferences. Check “Enable Global Menu” and unchecked “Icon”.

The globalmenu is compatible with most of the GTK application. However, some programs, such as Firefox will not work with it.

Creating Dashboard effect

We will use a combination of screenlets and Compiz widget plugin to achieve the dashboard effect.

If you have not installed Screenlets, click here to install.

If you have not installed Compiz Configuration Settings Manager, click here to install.

Alternatively, you can also type the following command in terminal to install:

sudo apt-get install screenlets compizconfig-settings-manager

Go to System->Preferences->CompizConfig Settings Manager. On the Left, click on Desktop. On the right, put a check beside ‘Widget layer’

Go to Applications –>Accessories->Screenlets. Activate the widgets that you want to display. Right click on the widget and select ‘Properties’. Go to Options tab and select ‘Treat as widget’. Do this for all the widgets that you have activated.

You can now see your dashboard in action by pressing F9.

Fixing up some small detail

Until now, your desktop should be very close to a Mac desktop, but
there are still some small details such as the Gnome icon at the top
panel, mouse cursor etc. Let’s fix them up now.

Replace the apple logo

1. Download the apple icon (Right-click and select “save link as”).

2. Go to Places –> Home Folder. Press Ctrl + H to reveal the hidden files.

3. Navigate to /.icons/Mac4Lin_Icons_v1.0_RC/scalable/places. Scroll down to find the images distributor-logo.png, gnome-main-menu.png, main-menu.png and start-here.png. Note that all of them are the same image. Rename them to distributor-logo.png.old, gnome-main-menu.png.old, main-menu.png.old and start-here.png.old respectively.

4. Now, with the apple icon that you have downloaded, make four copies and rename them to distributor-logo.png, gnome-main-menu.png, main-menu.png and start-here.png. Copy and paste all of them to the folder.

5. Logout and login again. The logo at the top panel should change to the apple icon now.

Changing mouse cursor

Go to System –> Preferences –> Appearance. Select Customize. Click on the Pointer tab. Select Mac4Lin_Cursors_v1.0_RC. Click Close.

Configuring usplash screen

Until now, you have done up the interior, it’s time to fix the exterior: usplash screen and grub screen.

Install startupmanager by clicking here or type the following command in the terminal:

sudo apt-get install startupmanager

Go to System -> Administration -> Startup-Manager. Click on the Appearance tab.

Press the Manage bootloader themes button. This will pop up a window allowing you to select the background image for the GRUB.

Click on the Add button and navigate to File System –> Home –> Username –> Mac4Lin_v1.0_RC1 –> GRUB. You should see three files. Refer to the below screenshots on how each file looks like. Pick the one that you like best.

Back to the main window, select the image from the drop down bar. Remember to check the box “Use background image for bootloader menu”.

There is a bug in Ubuntu Intrepid that prevent the user from
changing the usplash screen. We have to do a workaround using splashy.
Here’s the hack for it:

Remove the default usplash

sudo apt-get autoremove usplash

Download these two files to your desktop:

libsplashy1_0.3.10-1_i386.deb

splashy_0.3.10-1_i386.deb

Double-click the downloaded files to install.

Download the osx-splash splashy theme file to your Home folder.

In your terminal,

sudo splashy_config –i ~/osx-splash.tar.gz

sudo mv /etc/splashy/config.xml /etc/splashy/config.xml.old

sudo cp /etc/splashy/themes/osx-splash/config.xml /etc/splashy/config.xml

Now, we need to edit the GRUB file

gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Scroll down till you find the kernel entry. Append the term vga=792 to the end of the kernel line (see screenshot below). Save and close.

Uninstallation

If you want to change the theme back to the original setting, here is what you need to do:

1. Remove the globalmenu from the top panel

2. Remove all the installed files:

sudo apt-get autoremove splashy libsplashy1 gnome-globalmenu

3. Restore the usplash theme and remove the vga=792 from the GRUB file.

sudo apt-get install usplash

4. Uninstall the Mac4Lin themes

cd Mac4Lin_v1.0_RC

sh Mac4Lin_Uninstall_v1.0_RC.sh

I.Prepare a T6 Screwdriver,Tweezers and also a BlackBerry 8820.

II. Shutdown your device, dispatch your battery, SIM card and TF(MicroSD) Card.(I forgot to dispatch my TF)

III. Back housing disassembling.

a)Unscrew the 4 screws located at the four corners in the frame of the battery case.

b) Follow the image to pull out the side casing(Please pay attention to the RED ARROW that marked the 3 hooks symmetrical left and right side).

c) After the two side casing are both removed, lift the back casing from its bottom, and push it to top horizonally to remove the back casing.

IV.Take out the Mainboard(MB).

a)Unscrew the two screws located at the top right and left.

b)Pull down gently to remove the antenna (WiFi/GSM/GPS).

c) Pay attention to the cable on the top left and then dispatch the screen board and the MB.

d)Gently pull out the cable socket of screen, and the keyboard cable may invisible at this time, you may lift the board a little to unhook the keyboard cable.

GSM/WiFi/GPS Module Shielding case, the white wire beneath is the antenna of WiFi(Similar to the Laptop's WiFi antenna).

V.Disassembling procedure completed.

Follow the reverse procedure to assemble the device, and turn on it to check if it's all right....

【黑莓糖】BlackBerry 8820 拆机图解

一、准备工具（T6螺丝刀一把，镊子），以及BB8820一台

二、关机，拆电池，SIM卡，TF卡（我忘了拆……别学我）

三、背壳拆卸

1）拆卸图片中电池仓上下左右4个螺丝

2）按照图示用吉他拨片或者指甲轻轻撬开侧边三个卡扣（左右6个卡扣都是对称的）

3）两个侧边拆卸后，从下方抬起背壳，到顶部时水平轻推

四、主板拆卸

1）拧开左上右上两个螺丝

2）下巴部位带字的是（WiFi/GSM/GPS）天线，向下轻轻拉即可拔出

3）屏幕和主板即可分离

4）分离主板和屏幕，注意看图示，分离要轻巧（屏幕排线扣可以先打开，键盘排线扣埋在里面可以分离主板的时候打开，尽量不要靠拉拽分离排线）

GSM/WiFi/GPS无线模块的屏蔽罩，下方白色导线为WiFi天线（类似笔记本天线连接方式）

五、分离完成

按照逆过程装上……开机：

After BlackBerry types lay eyes on the 8900, the same question immediately gets asked time and time again: "Why would I buy a Bold over this?" Indeed, it's hard to argue that the 8900 isn't the better looking handset, but for now, the Bold gets to lord its fancy-schmancy 3G radio over the 8900's technologically inferior head. That might just be where the rumored 9300 "Gemini" comes into play, though, which -- according to Boy Genius Report -- will feature a larger, higher-res screen than the 8900's already amazing display, a beefy processor, a slightly more "rounded" keyboard, and most importantly, quadband EDGE plus triband HSDPA. There isn't any solid information on a release window for this one yet (we'd doubt that even RIM has an answer for that one at this point), so if you had a Bold in mind, don't feel bad about pulling the trigger -- yet.

随着网络的普及, 许多人都想到利用网络这样新的工具来学英文. 最简单的方法–在网络上抓一个老美来聊天! 但是有那么简单吗？一来两个人没有共同的话题, 老美跟你谈美式足球, 你跟他讲超级东西军, 再加上时下美国的青少年有许多独特的语言, 除此之外他们很喜欢用一些简写, 例如 I'll 有些人就直接打 ill, OK 就简称 k. Because 呢就是简略为 coz; Ready 又变成了 rdy. 所以要跟他们沟通实在困难，这里会告诉你一些在网络上非常特别的英语！.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------1.Hi, there. 嗨, 你好.首先来谈谈在网络上聊天的基本大原则. 网上聊天凡事要尽可能简单. 因为打字的速度远不若说话的速度快, 所以能简写的简称的就要尽可能去简化. 例如平常老美见面打招呼最常用的是, "How are you doing?" 或是 "How are you?" 但在网络上比较常见的则是, "Hi!" 或是 "Hello." 如果是认识的人, 则在 "Hi!" 或 "Hello." 之后加上名字, 例如, "Hi! Claire." 或是 "Hello! Claire" 如果是不认识的人, 则用 "Hi! there." 或是 "Hi! you."--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------2. A/S/L? 年龄/性别/所在地?如果你是第一次跟老美聊天, 他们通常都会先问你 A/S/L ? 有些人更懒, 连中间那一杠都不打, 直接打 asl? 意思虽然完全一样, 但是如果你之前没看过这样的用法, 包准你是很难猜出 asl 是什么意思. 回答的方式也很简单, 假设有个女生今年十八, 家住芝加哥 (Chicago) 则她可以回答, "18/ f / Chicago"如果你不会用 a/s/l ? 这种问法, 而分开问, "How old are you?".(你多大了?) "Boy or girl?" (男的女的?) "Where are you from?" (从哪里来?) 那么就违反了网络上要言简意该的大原则, 这样很快就会露出马脚, 让别人听出你不是跟他们一伙的.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------3. S'up? 什么事?"What's up?" 是老美彼此之间常用的一种打招呼方式. 但时下美国的青少年喜欢把 "What's up?" 发成 "S'up?" 因为他们觉得这样子很酷.网络上常看到的写法则是 "sup?" 第一次看到 "sup?" 我的第一个反应是 sup 是 supper (晚餐)的简写, 害我还以为人家问我吃过晚餐了没? 其实不是, "sup?" 只是一种打招呼的方式而已, 通常你可以简单地回答, "Not much." 或是 "Nothing much." 就行啦!--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------4. Lol. 很好笑.Lol 就是 laugh out loud 的简写, 就是「很好笑, 让我笑得很大声」的意思 通常是放在句尾来加强语气, 例如, "I got my butt kicked by an eight-year-old boy..... lol." (我被一个八岁的小男孩干掉了.... 真好笑). 其实这是我个人惨痛的经验, 网络游戏居然玩不过一个八岁的小男孩?另外跟 lol 一样常见的则是表情符号, 例如笑脸就是 . 还有一些老中才比较常用的诸如单纯笑脸. ^__^, 笑脸带酒涡 .^__^. 笑脸加胜利的手势 ^__^Y. 我觉得发明这些表情符号的人还是真乱有创意的. 注1--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------5. After seven sounds cool. 七点之后听起来不错.许多老美喜欢把 cool 这个字挂在嘴边, 不管什么东西都可以说 cool. 例如, "He is a cool guy." (他是个好人.) 或是, "This game is cool." (这个游戏很棒) 不过由于 cool 这个字发音的关系, 有些人会把这个字误认为是「酷」的意思, 其实这是不太正确的. Cool 意指很棒, 在程度上和 great 相去不远, 它比 good 和 fine 来的强一些, 但比 awesome, terrific 要来得弱一点.所以如果你跟别人约某个时间上网厮杀, 别人循问你, "After seven?" 你就可以回答, "After seven sounds fine." (如果七点之后可以接受的话) 或是 "After seven sounds cool." (七点之后听来蛮不错的.)--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------6. Are you a newbie? 你是新手吗?在网络上玩游戏最怕碰到两种人, 一种就是 newbie, 也就是所谓的新手, 这种人常常搞不清楚状况, 纯粹是来搅局的. 另外一种叫 lagger. 也就是指那些网络联机速度很慢的人, 由于是多人对战的游戏, 通常只要有一个人慢, 其它人的速度就全部会被拖慢. 所以有些游戏间干脆注明了, "No newbie, no lagger." (不淮有新手, 不淮有联机太慢的人)不过如果你是新手怎么办? 网络上的人也不是那么绝情的. 他们通常会开所谓 "Newbie Only" 的游戏间, 到这些地方来, 你就不必担心自己作了什么蠢事而被指责了. 另外还有一些人会开 "Chat Only" 的游戏间, 在这里是纯聊天不玩游戏. 可以先来这里适应一下也蛮不错的.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------7. Give him a boot. 把它给踢出去.在网络上不管是聊天室也好, 玩多人对战的游戏也好, 通常都会有一个主持人. 主持人最大的功用就是维持秩序. 所以例如有人说脏话的话, 他就可以把你给踢出去. 这个「踢」在这里老美比较不会用 kick, 而是用一个非常传神的字 boot (长筒靴), give someone a boot 意指给某人一脚, 也就是把某人踢出去的意思. 例如, "Alex is a cheater, give him a boot." (Alex 是一个会作弊的人, 把他给踢出去吧!)另外 boot 这个字也常常单独当动词用, 例如 "Boot the goddamned newbie." (把那个该死的新手给踢出去.)--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------8. Yup/ Nope. 是的/ 不是的.老美在说 Yes 时, 常会有一些小小的变化, 例如 yup (或作 yep) 和 yeah 同样是 yes 的意思, 如果要细分的话, yup 听来简捷有力, 通常用在非常肯定的回答上. 例如, "Do you want to play? Yup." (你要玩吗? 是的.) 而 yeah 则比较是附合性质, 表示同意对方的看法. 例如, "That movie was really stupid. Yeah, I guess so." (那部电影真的很无聊. 我想是吧!)相同的道理, no 也可以说成 nope Nope 表示坚决的否定. 例如, "Did you break my window? Nope." (你打破了我的窗户吗? 不是我.)--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------9. I think you are a cool guy. Btw, do you know how to boot that guy?我想你是个好人. 顺道一问, 你知道要怎么踢人吗?Btw 是一个常见的简写, 代表 by the way 的意思. 它通常是被用在语气转折的地方. 例设你原来在说 A 事情, 突然你又想讲 B 事情, 那么中间就可以用一个 btw, 中文可以翻成「顺道一提」或是 「顺道一问」的意思.相较于 btw 是一个连接词, 用来转折语气, well 则被用来当成是发语词. 目的是让整句话听来更顺畅. 例如你可以单说, "I think you are a cool guy." 但也可以这么说, "Well, I think you are a cool guy."--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------10. See ya. 再见.如果两个人话不投机, 还是趁早溜之大吉. 所以「再见」这句话一定要会. 在网上说再见通常也很简单, 就说, "Bye." "See you." 哈，我这是无视命名规则……

其实还是上一版，不过为了和之前那一版区别一下……

目前收到的意见建议如下：

1、输入法切换对话框字体反差太小，看不清内容；

2、主页快捷按键6位置的不能正常调出；

3、自定义墙纸之后，如果选：重设初始墙纸，那么TOday的墙纸会变成初始而程序列表（Home）里面的不会变

4、 两行短信列表，文字被削尾；

5、application list下方中文字体太大，被削头；

6、能通过系统字体设置调整Theme的字体；（这个问题我还真不知道如何解决……需要请教一下高人）

7、Menu的字体适当减小，显示更多菜单项；

8、缩小待机界面的Banner部分，目前时间字体可适当缩小，网络信号字体/Icon可适当缩小，并将位置移动到右上角；

9、缩小top bar的高度，更多的内容显示区域；

 

主要涉及对话框配色问题、中英文混合显示字体太大、Menu字体太大等，另外我想解释一下，网络类型标识和信号没有移到右上角的原因是我不想让网络活动标识（双箭头）遮盖住信号……不知大伙儿能不能理解……

We've been hearing some idle chatter that RIM intends to redo its Pearl 8220 flip in a CDMA flavor any minute now -- and RIM's one of the best manufacturers in the game at spreading its wealth equally between the GSM and CDMA sides of the fence, so an 8230 model seemed like a foregone conclusion from the moment the 8220 was announced. Sure enough, we now have a shot of a Verizon-branded 8230 doing its thing -- not really what Bold hopefuls on Verizon were hoping for, we'd imagine, but a solid consumer-grade offering nonetheless. The fella who posted the shot over on CrackBerry's forums doesn't know what colors will be available at launch, but mentions that he expects it'll be "coming soon." CTIA in April, perhaps?

Some modern phones do a pretty good job of rebooting at random on their own without additional assistance from miscreants, but unfortunately, the real world is filled with people who'd like to make your gadgets just a little bit buggier than they already are. Enter this nifty little vulnerability recently discovered to affect a good number of Sony Ericsson models, involving a specially crafted WAP Push message carried via SMS that'll instantly restart the phone. That's not the best part, though -- in theory, an attacker could send you a string of these bad boys that would get queued up by your carrier, so the second the phone comes back online, it gets the next message and restarts once again -- potentially leading to a long, painful spell without a usable handset. Apparently, there isn't any known fix for this, so if you're carrying one of the affected models, just stay on the good side of any evil-doers you happen to know for now, okay? Follow the break for a video of the restarts in action (we understand the outgoing calls are just to demonstrate that the attack can be initiated at any time, though we can't say for sure).
